National Dementia Audit - Staff Questionnaire

It is thought that up to a quarter of hospital beds are filled with people living with dementia at any one time. The National Audit of Dementia assesses the quality of care provided to this vulnerable patient group when they are in hospital. As part of the audit, we need to understand what support and training the staff caring for these people receive to help them provide the best care possible.

In Round 3 of the audit (which took place in 2016), 1713 Allied Healthcare Professionals told us their opinions on such things as the training they had received, whether night time bed moves are avoided for people with dementia, and how supported they felt by dementia specialist staff in the hospital. Thank you so much to everyone who completed the staff questionnaire in 2016! The information we received from you helped to demonstrate that while policies may exist in hospitals, this does not necessarily mean staff have the required support and provisions on the front line. From your responses, we were able to highlight in our key messages for Round 3 that the nutritional needs of people with dementia are not always being met and that hospital staff need more support from dementia specialist staff, particularly out of hours.

You can see all the reports from Round 3 (including the report for your hospital which includes all of the staff feedback) at

In Round 4 of the audit, we would like to gain even more feedback from allied healthcare professionals, so we have an even more powerful message to show hospital managers and commissioners. So, if you work in an acute general hospital in England or Wales, please complete the staff questionnaire when it is available this summer! The questionnaire will be available at from 4th June until 21st September 2018. It will take a maximum of 20 minutes to complete. You will need your hospital code to complete the questionnaire, which can be obtained from your hospital audit lead, or by calling the NAD Project Team on 020 3701 2707 or 020 3701 2681. Everyone who completes a questionnaire will have the opportunity to enter a prize draw to win one of five £50 vouchers for a high street store of their choice.
